The Bird Footprint stitch is a pretty stitch that looks like the foot of a bird. It is an open stitch that is lacy but chunky and works up quickly. In this stitch guide I will show you how to crochet the Bird Footprint stitch with all the pictures that you need along with a video guide that you can follow along with too.

The Bird Footprint stitch is a thick yet open crochet stitch that has stacks of triple clusters. These clusters look like the 3 toes of a birds foot which is how it gets it’s name.
I first used the Bird Footprint stitch as one of the pieces in the Wall Of Stitches Crochet Along – a sampler blanket pattern made up of 48 individual pieces, each made with a different crochet stitch. You can access the entire pattern for free here
This stitch is an easy 2 row repeat, but you do need to bear in mind that the stitch count is different between the two rows by a significant number, which will throw you off if you’re not aware of it.
For the sample in the picture below I used Paintbox 100% cotton aran. A beautiful non mercerised 100% cotton yarn that comes in a good variety of colours that are amazingly saturated with pigment for wonderfully vibrant colours that will make your crochet grab every ones attention.

I also used my trusty Clover Amour hooks which are perfect if you are looking for a good value ergonomic crochet hook that won’t cause your hand to ache if you are crocheting for long periods of time. I’ve tried many different crochet hooks over the years, but I always end up coming back to my trusty Clovers. They just sit so well in my hand and never let me down.

Abbreviations
- Ch = Chain
- St = Stitch
- Sk = Skip
- Sc = Single crochet
- BPSc = Back Post Single Crochet
- Dc = Double Crochet
Start by making a foundation chain in multiples of 4 plus 1 (plus 1 for your turning chain)
Row 1. In the second ch from your hook make a sc. *Ch 3, sk the next 3 chains and then make a sc* repeat between *and*
Row 2. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turning ch in the first st and then make another dc also in the first st. *Sk to the next sc and make 3dc*
Repeat between *and*. Make 2dc in the last sc of the row.
You will have significantly fewer stitches in row 2 than your other rows. This is just how the stitch works out.
Row 3. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in the first st. *ch 3, make a BPSc around the middle st of the 3dc in the row below*
Repeat between *and* Make a sc in the last st of the row
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have as many rows as you need. I recommend finishing up on a repeat of row 3 so that you will have the same number of stitches as your first row.
How To Add A Border To The Bird Footprint Stitch
The Bird Footprint stitch has both double and single crochet rows. So for your border you need to add 2 stitches into the side of each double crochet row and 1 stitch into the side of every single crochet row.
I always recommend that you make a round of single crochet stitches around your piece first before adding any border pattern that you have planned, as doing this just helps to even your stitches out and make a nice solid round to add any further stitches into.
