The Compress stitch is a single crochet based stitch that works up fairly quickly and has a wonderful looking texture. So if you’re looking for a hole free stitch that creates a beautiful plain but textured fabric, then this is a fabulous stitch to go for.

I first used the Compress stitch as one of the pieces in the Wall Of Stitches Crochet Along – a sampler blanket pattern made up of 48 individual pieces, each made with a different crochet stitch. You can access the entire pattern for free here

Although the Compress stitch is made using only single crochet stitches, it isn’t overly dense but it does create a close fabric that is still breathable but is hole free.

For the sample in the picture below I used Paintbox 100% cotton aran. A beautiful non mercerised 100% cotton yarn that comes in a good variety of colours that are amazingly saturated with pigment for wonderfully vibrant colours that will make your crochet grab every ones attention.

How To Crochet The Compress Stitch

Abbreviations

• Ch = Chain
• St = Stitch
• Sc = Single Crochet
• Sc2tog = Single crochet two together

Start by making a foundation chain in multiples 0f 2 plus 1 (plus 1 for your turning chain)

Row 1. In the 2nd ch from your hook start a sc2tog and finish it in the next ch. Then ch1. *Over the next 2 ch make a sc2tog, ch1* 

repeat between *and* finish the row by making a sc in the last st

Row 2. Turn and ch1. Starting in the first st of the row 

*make a sc2tog over the next 2 st and then ch1* Make a sc in the last st of the row

Repeat row 2 until you have as many rows as you need.

How To Add A Border To The Compress Stitch

The Compress stitch is made up entirely of single crochet rows. So to add a border you need to make 1 stitch into the side of every single crochet row.

I always recommend that you make a round of single crochet stitches around your piece first before adding any border pattern that you have planned, as doing this just helps to even your stitches out and make a nice solid round to add any further stitches into.
