I first used the Puff And V stitch as one of the pieces in the Wall Of Stitches Crochet Along – a sampler blanket pattern made up of 48 individual pieces, each made with a different crochet stitch. You can access the entire pattern for free here
The Puff And V stitch is a very open, chunky yet lace like stitch that is easy to make. It is a stitch of contradictions being thick, yet breathable, open yet warm. It is an easy 2 row repeat that is simple to keep track of your stitch placement and works up quickly.
For the sample in the picture below I used Paintbox 100% cotton aran. A beautiful non mercerised 100% cotton yarn that comes in a good variety of colours that are amazingly saturated with pigment for wonderfully vibrant colours that will make your crochet grab every ones attention.
This how to guide is part of Froggity Frog’s Stitch Vault collection. Have you seen all the other stitches in there? You can take a look here all the guides are free to access and maybe you will discover some new stitches to create for yourself.

I also used my trusty Clover Amour hooks which are perfect if you are looking for a good value ergonomic crochet hook that won’t cause your hand to ache if you are crocheting for long periods of time. I’ve tried many different crochet hooks over the years, but I always end up coming back to my trusty Clovers. They just sit so well in my hand and never let me down.

Abbreviations
- Ch = Chain
- ChSp = Chain Space
- St = Stitch
- YO = Yarn Over
- Sk = Skip
- Dc = Double Crochet
Start by making a foundation chain in multiples of 6 plus 5 (plus 2 for your turning chain)
Row 1. In the 4th ch from your hook (your turning ch counts as the first st of the row) make a dc. In the next ch make (dc, ch2, dc) – a V st – all in the same ch.
*Sk the next 2 st and then make a puff st (YO, insert your hook into the ch, YO and pull up a loop x 3. YO and pull through 6 loops, YO pull through 2 loops).
Sk the next 2 st and then make a V st* repeat between *and*
when you have 4 ch left, sk the next 2 ch and then make a dc in each of last 2 ch – 10 puff st, 11 V st, 4 dc / 58 st
Row 2. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turning ch in the first st and then make a dc in the next st. *Make a puff st in the chsp of the V st.
Make a V st in the top of the puff st* repeat between *and* Finish the row by making a dc in each of the last 2 st – 10 V st, 11 puff st, 4 dc / 58st
Row 3. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turning ch in the first st and then make a dc in the next st. *Make a V st in top of the puff st
Make a puff in the chsp of the V st* repeat between *and*. Make a dc in each of the last 2 st – 10 puff st, 11 V st, 4 dc / 58 st
Rows 4-7. Repeat rows 2 and 3
How To Add A Border To The Puff And V Stitch
The Puff And V stitch is made up of only dc rows, so to add a border you just need to make 2 stitches into the side of every row. However adding a border across the top of the stitch is a bit more complicated as the stitch count is different to your foundation chain.
So to add a border across the top, you need to make a sc in the first st, sk the next st, sc in the first dc of the V, make 2sc in the ch sp, sc in the next dc
*make a sc into the top of the puff, make a sc into the next dc, make 3sc into the chsp, sc into the next dc* repeat until you get to the last V. Into the last V make a sc into the dc, 2sc into the chsp, sc into the next sc, sk the next st, sc into the last st of the row.
I always recommend that you make a round of single crochet stitches around your piece first before adding any border pattern that you have planned, as doing this just helps to even your stitches out and make a nice solid round to add any further stitches into.
