The Uneven Gravel stitch is a one sided, heavily textured crochet stitch that is also dense and hole free. It is a fantastic stitch is you want a fabric that’s very tactile but it is a yarn eater of a stitch. In this stitch guide I will show you how to crochet the Uneven Gravel stitch with all the pictures that you need along with a video guide that you can follow along with too.

I first used the Uneven Gravel stitch as one of the pieces in the Wall Of Stitches Crochet Along – a sampler blanket pattern made up of 48 individual pieces, each made with a different crochet stitch. You can access the entire pattern for free here

The Uneven Gravel is a highly textured stitch that looks fabulous and is perfect if you want a lot of texture on your fabric. It is a yarn eater of a stitch, but it’s totally worth all of that yarn as it looks amazing.

The Uneven Gravel stitch would be a great stitch to use as a border a plainer stitch to give it a textured finish. It would also be a lovely addition to a twiddle muff due to how tactile this stitch is.

For the sample in the picture below I used Paintbox 100% cotton aran. A beautiful non mercerised 100% cotton yarn that comes in a good variety of colours that are amazingly saturated with pigment for wonderfully vibrant colours that will make your crochet grab every ones attention.

How To Crochet The Uneven Gravel Stitch

Abbreviations

• Ch = Chain
• St = Stitch
• Sc = Single Crochet
• FLO = Front Loop Only
• Dc3tog = Double Crochet 3 Together

Start by making a foundation chain in multiples of 2 plus 1 (plus 1 for your turning chain)

Row 1.  In the third ch from your hook make a sc (your turning ch counts as the first st of the row). Make a sc in each ch across

Row 2. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in the first st. Then using the FLO make a sc in each st across. Make a sc in the last st of the row. 

Row 3. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in the first st of the row. 

*Make a cluster (dc3tog) in the FLO of the st 2 rows below. 

Make a sc in the next st.* Repeat between *and*.

When you have 2st left, make a cluster in the next st and then make a sc in the last st.

Row 4. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in the first st. Using the FLO make a sc in each st across. Make a sc in the last st of the row.

Row 5. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in each of the first 2 stitches of the row.

*Make a cluster in the FLO of the st 2 rows below. 

Make a sc in the next st*. Repeat between *and*. When you have 2st left make a sc in each of the last 2 st.

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until you have as many rows as you need.

How To Add A Border To The Uneven Gravel Stitch

The Uneven Gravel stitch is made up of only sc rows, so to add a border you just need to make 1 stitch into the side of every row.

I always recommend that you make a round of single crochet stitches around your piece first before adding any border pattern that you have planned, as doing this just helps to even your stitches out and make a nice solid round to add any further stitches into.
