This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below.

UK Translation

Single crochet (sc) = double crochet

Half Double Crochet (hdc) = half treble crochet

The Pattern

We will be using a 3.5mm hook for the whole border

Before we join the panel we will be adding the first round of the border.

Start by joining a standing single crochet into one of the sc stitches in the middle of the loops of the interlocking border.

We are going to be making a simple repeating pattern around all 49 squares.

Sc into both sc stitches. Around the chain of the interlocking border make a sc. Insert your hook into the 2nd skipped stitch in the sc border and pull up a loop so it’s the same height as the sc stitch you just made. Yarn over and pull through both loops. Make another sc around the chain.

Repeat this pattern down the side of the square. When you get to the join between 2 squares, make a sc in the middle stitch of the corner sc’s, then in the same stitch make a slip stitch into the middle corner sc of the next square – this pulls the squares close together. Then in the same stitch make a sc.

When you get to the corner of your blanket make 3 sc in the middle of the 3 sc around the corner of the square. Then continue with the same pattern as above.

Once this round is completed all the way around your squares, it’s time to attach the mosaic panel. If you have also made the interlocking panel, you will attach this too.

To attach the panels we are going to whip stitch them onto the first round of the border.

Turn the panel and your squares over so the wrong side is facing you. You should have the same number of stitches in the width of your panel as in the row of your 7 squares.

Using the back loop only in the border row whip stitch the foundation row of the panel stitch for stitch. Use the ends to pull the corners of the 2 pieces right together when you weave in.

The next round of the border goes around the squares and the panels. 

Make a hdc in any stitch. Make a hdc in every stitch all the way around. When you get to the corner make 3 hdc in the middle stitch of the 3 sc in the previous round.

Last round.

For this last row we are going to swirl your colours together.

I’ve used 3 colours, but you can use any number of colours you wish

Join colour 1 into any stitch with a standing sc. Chain 5 then take the yarn off your hook (I recommend pulling a big loop to stop the chains undoing themselves)

Join colour 2 into the next stitch with a standing sc and chain 5 then take your yarn off your hook

Join colour 3 into the next stitch with a standing sc and chain 5 then take your yarn off your hook.

*Go back to colour one and slip the loop back onto your hook. Working in front of the other colours, make a sc into the next stitch after where colour 3 was joined. Chain 5, then drop the loop again.

Slip the loop from colour 2 back onto your hook then working in front of the other colours, make a sc in the stitch next to colour 1

Slip the loop from colour 3 back onto your hook then working in front of the other colours, make a sc in the stitch next to colour 2*

Repeat between *and* all the way around. Slip stitch each colour into its matching beginning standing sc.

Tie off and weave in the ends.
