How To Crochet The Bar Stitch

How To Crochet The Bar Stitch

The Bar stitch is an easy crochet stitch to make that uses just single crochet and front post stitches to create this textured, hole free crochet stitch. In this stitch guide I will show you how to crochet the Bar stitch with all the pictures that you need along with a video guide that you can follow along with too.

I first used the Bar stitch in the FrankenScrap crochet along as one of the pieces of the quilt like blanket. You can access the whole pattern for free here.

The Bar stitch is a single crochet based stitch that is simple to make with a lovely surface texture on one side, but also slow to make due to the small stitch size. I would definitely recommend using this stitch with chunky yarn if you wanted to crochet anything sizable with it. The Bar stitch would suit and project that needs a warm and hole free fabric such as snoods, mitts and even sweaters and blankets.

For the sample in the picture below I used Rico Cotton Essentials DK in shade 89. This is one of my go too yarns, and I have several balls of it in my stash. It’s 100% cotton and is lovely and silky and soft to the touch. It is a really nice cotton to work with and doesn’t split overly much.

The yarn I used in the pictures of this stitch guide below is Stylecraft Cotton Classique DK, a 100% cotton yarn. It’s a non mercerised cotton that is lovely and soft, but it can get a bit splitty if you frog it a couple of times. It does makes lovely cosy blankets though and is the yarn that got me hooked on cotton as my fibre of choice. I think I first got a ball of this yarn in a mystery bag I got off ebay, and it was a great yarn discovery for me and I’ve been loving using this yarn ever since.

I also used my trusty Clover Amour hooks which are perfect if you are looking for a good value ergonomic crochet hook that won’t cause your hand to ache if you are crocheting for long periods of time. I’ve tried many different crochet hooks over the years, but I always end up coming back to my trusty Clovers. They just sit so well in my hand and never let me down.

  • Ch = Chain
  • Sk = Skip
  • St = Stitch
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Fpdc = Front Post Double Crochet

Start by making a foundation chain in multiples of 3 plus 2 (plus 1 for your turning chain)

Row 1. In the 3rd ch from your hook (your turning ch counts as the first st of your row) make a sc. Make a sc in each stitch across

As the Bar stitch is made up of single crochet it is very easy to make your stitches quite tight which will make your crochet turn out smaller than you expected. If this is happening you can go up a hook size from what your yarn recommends so that your stitches loosen up.

Row 2. Turn and ch 1. Make a sc in each st across.

Row 3. Turn and ch1. Make a *sc in each of the next 2st. Make a fpdc around the post of the st 2 rows below* Repeat between *and* To finish the row, make a sc in each of the last 2 st.

Row 5. Turn and ch1. *Make a sc in each of the next 2 st. Make a fpdc around the fpdc 2 rows below* Repeat between *and* Finish the row by making a sc in each of the last 2 st

All of your fpdc stitches should line up in a straight line as you add more rows, looking like stripes running down the front of your fabric. All front post stitches will be on one side only.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 until you have as many rows as you need.
