Week 45 Of The FrankenScrap Crochet Along

Welcome to week 45 of the FrankenScrap crochet along, the ugliest and scrappiest crochet pattern that you ever did see!

Over the next 49 weeks, we are going to be making 53 different crochet stitches, each in a different piece of this patchwork blanket. The FrankenScrap was designed as a scrap project, so dive into your yarn stash and clear out those odds and ends that you’ve just not been sure what to do with.

The FrankenScrap is a completely free crochet along. Each week the next piece of the pattern will be published on my blog, but if you want the concise and add free pdf delivered to you each week that will remain in your Ravelry library, you can purchase that for just £5 here. This is a one off payment that covers the entirety of this CAL.

If you want to prep ahead, you can find out how much yarn you need for each week here as well as the layout and where each piece will fit.

Week 45 Of The FrankenScrap Crochet Along

Our next piece of the FrankenScrap crochet along is made with the Turtle stitch. For this piece you will need a total of 78 meters of DK / Light Worsted yarn. I used Sirdar Toscana DK – a 100% marled cotton yarn, which unfortunately has been discontinued. I only had one ball of this pretty yarn rattling around my yarn drawers, and now I’m wishing I had more as I’ve not seen any other yarns that have this type of colour marling to it and it was a nice smooth yarn to work with and didn’t split

I also used a 4 mm hook – I recommend using Clover Amour hooks. A cost effective hook that is comfortable in your hands thanks to their ergonomic design, so doesn’t make your hands tired when crocheting for long periods of time. I love my Clover hooks and although I own several different hook brands, I inevitably end up going back and using my trusty Clovers.

The Turtle stitch is a shell stitch that uses front loop and back loop only stitches to create ridges that add a ridge of texture across the top of the shells. All the texture is on one side of the fabric making this a single sided stitch. This stitch would look great used for blankets, clothing and much more besides.

Joining Your Pieces

Your finished piece should be 72 stitches wide and 13 rows high, which counts as 20 stitches high for joining purposes since you have dc rows and sc rows. You can see how the pieces are joined together here. If you are following my gauge, then your piece will measure 45cm wide and 10.5cm high. Remember this is just a size indication and if your gauge is consistent throughout, then your pieces will fit together nicely even if your sizes do not match with mine.

The Turtle stitch should be joined beneath week 42’s Falling Leaves stitch piece and week 43’s Side Saddle stitch piece leaving 15 stitches of the Side Saddle piece unattached. You will also join your piece to the left side of Week 26’s Little Waves stitch piece, leaving 9 stitches of the Little Waves unattached.

The layout below shows how your pieces should be attached in relation to each other.

Click here to see how to join your pieces with the single crochet join. They should line up stitch for stitch using the counts stated above.

Once you have joined this weeks Turtle stitch piece to the previous pieces, that is it for week 45 of the FrankenScrap crochet along, I’ll be back next Friday for week 46 and the next piece of your CAL at 8pm UK time.
