Each row needs 2 passes to complete. The 1st pass is where you pull up a loop in every stitch, then you work back in the second pass and pull through the loops.

This square is made from corner to corner and will be 5 blocks by 5 blocks. All blocks are joined to each other as we go. This stitch works up very tight, so expect your work to curl.

The Pattern

For this square you will need a 4.5mm hook

The order you will crochet each square is shown in the picture below.

Block 1. Start by chaining 7. 

Row 1. In the 2nd chain from your hook pull up a loop. Pull up a loop in every chain across. You will have 7 loops on your hook. 

Yarn over and pull through the first loop. *Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops* repeat between *and* until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.

This is your first row.

Row 2. Around the 2nd vertical post insert your hook and pull up a loop. Repeat this for every vertical post including the very last one. You will have 7 loops on your hook. 

Yarn over and pull through the first loop *Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops* repeat between *and* until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.

Rows 3 -5  repeat row 2

To finish the block you need to cast off. Around the 2nd vertical post insert your hook and make a slip stitch. Keep your slip stitches loose as you will need to crochet into them later. Slip stitch in each vertical post including the very last one. Chain 1.

This block is now finished and you can cut off your yarn.

Block 2

Join your yarn into the bottom right corner of the square you just completed. It’s best to do this by inserting your hook into the corner, then making the slip knot on your hook. This will give a single loop on your hook when you pull through. 

Chain 6

Row 1. In the 2nd chain from your hook pull up a loop. Pull up a loop in every chain across. Then insert your hook into the side of the first block and pull up a loop. You will have 7 loops on your hook. 

Yarn over and pull through two loops. *Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops* repeat between *and* until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.

Row 2. Around the 2nd vertical post insert your hook and pull up a loop. Repeat this for every vertical post then insert your hook into the side of the first block and pull up a loop. You will have 6 loops on your hook. *Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops* repeat between *and* until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.

Rows 3 -5  repeat row 2

To finish the block you need to cast off. Around the 2nd vertical post insert your hook and make a slip stitch. Keep your slip stitches loose as you will need to crochet into them later. Slip stitch in each vertical post then insert your hook into the 1st block and slip stitch into it. Chain 1.

This block is finished, and now we’re going to make block 3 into the top of block 1

Block 3

We’re going to use the slip stitches we finished block 1 with as our foundation row.

Row 1. In the first stitch pull up a loop. Pull up a loop in every stitch across. You will have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first loop. *Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops* repeat between *and* until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.

Rows 2-5 repeat row 1

Cast off the block with slip stitches just like block 1 and end with a chain 1. Cut off your yarn

Block 4 – repeat block 2

Block 5 – start in the top of block 2. This is a repeat of block 3, but do not chain 1 at the end of the block

Block 6 – repeat block 3, then cut off your yarn

Block 7 – repeat block 2

Block 8 and 9 – repeat block 5

Block 10 – repeat block 3 then cut off your yarn

Block 11 – repeat block 2

Block 12 – 14 repeat block 5

Block 15 – repeat block 3 then cut off your yarn

Block 16 – start in the top of block 11. Repeat as block 2

Block 17 – 19 repeat block 5, cut off your yarn after block 19

Block 20 – start on top of block 16. Repeat block 2

Block 21 and 22 – repeat block 5, cut off your yarn after block 22

Block 23 – start on top of block 20. Repeat block 2

Block 24 – repeat block 5

Block 25 – start on top of block 23. Repeat block 2

The Border

For the border make a sc in each stitch along all 4 sides, including the stitch where you connected each block together.

You should have 30 sc down each side, plus an extra stitch in each corner for the turn. This will make your stitch count as 32 stitches across each side and 124 stitches total (remember the extra stitch corner stitch is counted in the stitch count for both sides)

You have now finished your square and join and you can tie off and weave in the ends
