It’s week 35 of the Country Garden crochet along. This week we’re making our Butterfly round, which we will make with left over colours from previous weeks. Our butterflies are made around the posts of the stitches in the round below, so they have a lovely 3D effect and look like they have been appliqued on.
If you would like the ad free printable version, it is available either as part of my Lifetime Pattern Pass, or you can purchase it on its own for just £5 from Ravelry
This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation are:
- ch (Chain)
- sc (single crochet) = Double crochet
- dc (double crochet) = Treble crochet
- tr (treble crochet) = Double treble crochet
If you would like to follow my colour scheme in either Paintbox Cotton Aran or Caron Simply Soft, you can find my colours here

From here on in, you don’t need to worry too much about your stitch count. As long as you’re happy with how spread out your butterflies are, and everything is lying flat, missing or adding a stitch here and there will not affect the finished piece.
I’m using what’s left of the colours from the rest of the blanket to make my butterflies, so the colours are chosen at random but I haven’t used any shade of blue.
With Colour O, join into the 2nd corner stitch so that you will be working along the long side.
Make 1sc in the same stitch that you joined into, then make a sc in the next 26 stitches, changing colour in the last stitch – do not cut off Colour O
Now we will make a butterfly. We will be working around the post of the dc below the stitch you just made.
Ch4, make 3 tr around the post then ch 4. Make a slst around the same post. Still working around the same post, ch 4 and make 1 tr and 1 dc around the post. Ch 3, slst around the same post.
Now move to the post of the next dc. Ch3 and make 1dc and 1 tr around the post. Ch 4, slst around the same post. Ch 4, make 3 tr around the same post, ch 4 and slst around the post.
Cut off your butterfly colour, leaving at least a 4 inch tail. Now pick up Colour O again and make a sc into the top of the 2nd dc you were working around. Do not weave in your butterfly ends.
*Make a sc in the next 20 stitches, switching colour in the last stitch to make your next butterfly*
Repeat between *and* until you have 6 butterflies across the long side. Sc in the last 28 stitches, then make 2sc in the corner stitch.
Now we will be working along the short side.
Make a sc in the next 20 stitches, changing colour in the last stitch to make a butterfly
*Make a sc in the next 20 stitches, switching colour in the last stitch to make your next butterfly*
Repeat between *and* until you have 6 butterflies across the short side. Sc in the last 20 stitches, then make 2sc in the corner stitch.
Repeat everything above along the other 2 sides.
When you get back around to the beginning, make a sc in the same stitch you started in.
Don’t cut off, as we will be continuing with Colour O next week.
You will have 24 butterflies in total. Do not weave in your ends of your butterflies, we will be doing that later and use the ends to secure the wings in place.
That is this week complete.
