Our final square is the Rosebud stitch, which creates beautiful 3D flower buds that will add a stunning touch to hats, scarves, shawls or anything really.

This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation is below.

UK Translation

Single crochet (sc) = double crochet

Double crochet (dc) = treble crochet

The Pattern

For this square you will need a 3.5mm hook

Start by making a foundation chain of 32

Row 1. In the 4th chain from your hook make a dc (the turning chain counts as your first stitch). Dc in each chain across – 30 stitches

Turn

Row 2. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across, and change colour in the last 2 loops of your last dc – 30 stitches

Turn

Row 3. Chain 1. Sc in the first stitch. Sc in the next 9 stitches.

Chain 16. 

In the 4th chain from your hook make a dc, and make another 2 dc in the same stitch. Make 3 dc in each of the chains.

Roll up the row into a rosebud, then sc into the next stitch of row 3. Your rosebud should be on the front of your work. 

To secure your rose, we need to make a couple of slip stitches through the bottom. Pull up a long loop and remove your hook. Push your hook through the bottom of the rosebud so it goes through all the layers. Start on the opposite side to where your loop is, then catch your loop back on your hook and slip stitch. Make another slip stitch through the bottom in the same way so the rosebud is secure.

TIP – If you are finding the slip stitches difficult to do, then you can thread your loop through a warning needle to pull your yarn through the rose before slipping your hook back onto the loop and completing the slip stitch.

Sc in the next stitch of row 3, and sc until the end of the row and change colour in the last stitch.

Turn

Row 4. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across. Take care to make sure you include all the stitches behind the rosebud – 30 stitches.

Row 5. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across. – 30 stitches

Row 6. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across, and change colour in the final dc – 30 stitches

Row 7. Chain 1. Sc in the first stitch. Sc in the next 19 stitches.

Chain 16. In the 4th chain from your hook make a dc, and make another 2 dc in the same stitch. Make 3 dc in each of the chains.

Roll up the row into a rosebud, then sc into the next stitch of row 3. Your rosebud should be on the front of your work. 

Push your hook through the bottom of the rosebud so it goes through all the layers. Slip stitch. Make another slip stitch through the bottom so the rosebud is secure.

Sc in the next stitch of row 3, and sc until the end of the row and change colour in the last stitch.

Row 14. Chain 1 and make the alternate turning chain in the first stitch. Dc in each stitch across – 30 stitches

The Border

Make a sc in each stitch across the top and bottom.

For the sides make 1 sc in each rosebud row. Make 3 sc in the sides of row 1, 4, 8, 12 and 14. Make 2sc in the side of all other rows.

You should have 30 sc down each side, plus an extra stitch in each corner for the turn. This will make your stitch count as 32 stitches across each side and 124 stitches total (remember the extra stitch corner stitch is counted in the stitch count for both sides)

You have now finished your square and join and you can tie off and weave in the ends
