It’s finally time to get started! In week one of the Country Garden crochet along we’ll be making the first of the many different crochet stitches included in this beautiful design.

This week we’re making the first part of our lawn using the Long Wave Stitch, and we’ll make a couple of Daisies that will be added to our lawn but we won’t attach them until a later week

This pattern is written in US terms, but the UK translation are:

• sc (single crochet) = Double Crochet
• hdc (half double crochet) = Half treble crochet
• dc (double crochet) = treble crochet
• tr (treble crochet) = Double treble crochet

This week we will be using 3 different shades of green. Colours A, B and C in the colour chart

The Pattern

We’re going to start with Colour A and a 5mm hook – we will be using a 5mm hook throughout the design

Start by making a foundation chain of 46 – if you chain tightly you may find it better to use a 5.5mm hook for your foundation chain, and switch back to a 5mm for Row 1.

Row 1. In the 3rd chain from your hook make a sc (the turning chain counts as your first sc) sc in the next stitch. *Make a hdc in the next 2 stitches, dc in the next 2 stitches. Make a tr in each of the next 3 stitches. Then make a dc in the next 2 stitches, hdc in each of the next 2 stitches then make a sc in the next 3 stitches* repeat between *and* 45 stitches

Row 2. Turn, chain 1. working in the back loop only, sc in each stitch across – 45 stitches.

Row 3. Turn, chain 1. Working in the back loop only.

Make the treble turning chain in the 1st stitch. Make a tr in the next 2 stitches. *Then make a dc in the next 2 stitches, hdc in each of the next 2 stitches then make a sc in the next 3 stitches. In the next 2 stitches make a hdc, then dc in the next 2 stitches. tr in the next 3 stitches* repeat between *and*

Row 4. Turn, chain 1. working in the back loop only, sc in each stitch across. In the last stitch, change colour to Colour B – 45 stitches.

You can either cut off your yarn, or leave it and carry it up the sides later. Our colour changes are a bit long, so you will be carrying the yarn up the sides quite a way. I chose to cut off, but the choice is yours

Row 5. Turn, chain 1. Working in the back loop only. In the first stitch make a sc. Sc in the next 2 stitches. *Make a hdc in the next 2 stitches, dc in the next 2 stitches. Make a tr in each of the next 3 stitches. Then make a dc in the next 2 stitches, hdc in each of the next 2 stitches then make a sc in the next 3 stitches* repeat between *and* ‘ – 45 stitches

Rows 6 -8.  Repeat rows 2-4, switch to Colour C at the last 2 loops of Row 8.

Rows 9-12. repeat row 5, then repeat rows 2-4

That’s it for our main piece this week, but we’re also going to make a start on our Daisies.

Our lawn will have 8 Daisies in total, but we’ll only make 2 if them this week (unless you want to get a headstart and make all 8 now of course). We’re not going to attach them yet, that will happen in week 5.

With Colour D

Make a magic circle and chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) 

Round 1. make 6 sc in the circle. Slst into the 1st sc. cut off – Only weave in 1 of your tails

Round 2. Using Colour E, join into any sc in round 1.

Ch1, *in the same stitch make (hdc, dc, hdc) all in the same stitch. Slst into the next sc.* 

repeat between *and* slst into the 1st sc. Careful to avoid working into the slst at the end of round 1. Cut off and weave in both tails of this round – you should have 6 petals.
