Week 14 Of The Study Of Corners Crochet Along

Welcome to week 14 of the Study Of Corners crochet along! Let’s get started on bordering last weeks square and joining it to the row below.

Keep reading for our week 14 pattern but if you haven’t heard much about this crochet along before, then check out this blog post here which will tell you what to expect.

For week 14 we’re joining our C2C Mini V squares to both the Double crochet square and to the row below. By the end of this week you’re blanket will look like the picture below.

The Dc and the Mini V squares joined

For this square you’ll need a 5mm hook – this is the hook size I used for the whole pattern. I used Caron Simply Soft in the shade Off White. But you can use any aran or worsted weight yarn of your choice.

If you’d rather skip the ads and get an expansion pack alongside each week’s square, you can grab this pattern on Ravelry for £5 here. It’s released on the same weekly schedule as here, just with the extras and none of the clutter.

(And if you’re the type who collects every pattern I release – this one included – my Pattern Pass gets you the lot, including everything I publish in future, for a one-off £49.99.)

We are going to be bordering each piece with a C2C border, which we will also use to join the pieces too.

It’s very important that you take note of the direction your starting C2C block lies for each piece. If it’s wrong, your blocks will not line up with the ones from the previous pieces.

For the blocks on the left hand edge, you will start the border by making 4 rows of C2C stitches. Then how we continue after that depends on which direction we want our first C2C Block to lie – these instructions will be under each square.

To make a C2C stitch:

Start by making a foundation chain of 6.

Row 1. In the 4th ch from your hook make a dc. Make a dc in each of the next 2 ch – 1 C2C Block

A C2C Block

Row 2. Turn and ch6. In the 4th ch from your hook make a dc. Make a dc in each of the next 2 ch. Slst into the chsp of the block in the previous row and ch3.

The first 2 C2C blocks

Make 3dc into the chsp – 2 C2C Blocks

Row 3. Turn and ch6. In the 4th ch from your hook make a dc. Make a dc in each of the next 2 ch. *Slst into the chsp of the block in the previous row and ch3. Make 3dc into the chsp*. Repeat between *and* until you reach the end of the row – 3 C2C Blocks

To continue increasing your rows, Repeat row 3. You will add a block with every row

To decrease your C2C stitches

Turn, make a slst into each of the 3 dc of the previous block. Slst into the chsp of that block and ch3.

The slst for the C2C decrease

Make 3dc into the chsp.

Slst into the turning ch of the last block of the previous row – You will lose 1 block every row.

As we want our borders around the pieces to be straight sided, we will be using a mix of increasing and decreasing for our rows.

C2C Mini V Square Border

Week 14 Of The Study Of Corners Crochet Along

This is where we join your Mini V squares to your Dc squares.

(The pictures below are upside down – it was the easiest way to make these stitches)

Start by joining into the corner of the Dc square (with the back side of the square facing you) and chain 6. Now make a C2C block into that chain. You will finish your block back at the side of the Dc square as in the picture below.

Your C2C block will have the stitches in the up / down direction.

Week 14 First block orientationjoining your first C2C block into the side of your square

Slip stitch into the side of the Dc square 2 stitches down from your join. Now chain 2 and make a slst 2 stitches down. The picture below shows you where you need to join your C2C blocks into the side of the Dc square. You will be joining 1 C2C block into the side of every row.

Turn and ch3. Make a C2C block into the chsp you just made and continue making the row of C2C stitches.

row 2 of the c2c join

Make 4 rows of C2C stitches. We will be joining into the side of the Mini V square at the start of row 5.

To start the 5th row, ch3 and then join into the top left corner of the Mini V square – this will look best if you remove your hook from the working loop, insert your hook into the square and then hook back into the working loop and pull through.

Then ch2 and slst into the side of the Mini V square 2 stitches up from your initial join.

For the Mini V square, to count where your C2C blocks need to be joined the rows need to be considered in pairs. Row 1 needs 2 stitches made into the side, the 2nd row needs 1 stitch joined into the side. The picture below shows how to count the stitches down the side of the square.

Now you will make a C2C block into each of the 3 chains you made.

continuing joining down the squares

Continue down the side of each of the squares. Each square will have 18 C2C blocks down each edge.

The Dc and the Mini V squares joined

When you reach the bottom of the Dc square, keep going. You will be joining into the row below while also continuing to join into the side of the Mini V square.

This is the part where we will be working through the middle of where the 4 squares come together.

Week 14 of the Study Of Corners crochet along joining to the row below

Once you reach the bottom of the Dc square, you will keep working downwards so that you crochet into the border from the last square. This will take you to the top of the Cluster square which will need 5 more rows of C2C adding to it’s top edge.

The Cluster squares stitches get counted in the same way as the Mini V stitches do.

Where to place your stitches into the C2C Cluster square

After you join into the top of the Cluster square, start your next C2C row and work back up to the side of the Mini V square. Carry on making rows of C2C until you finish working into the top of the Cluster square, which will also mean that you’ve reached the bottom of the Mini V square

Now you’re going to join into the first C2C block in the join between the Cluster and the Moss square. You will be slip stitching between the blocks shown by the arrows in the picture below.

Joining into C2C blocks

Then turn and start the next row of C2C stitches. This will take you to the bottom edge of the Mini V square. Slip stitch into the chsp of the last C2C block made into the side of the Mini V square, then slip stitch into the corner of the square.

Now ch 2 and then slip stitch 2 stitches over on the bottom edge of the Mini V square so that you can start making your next C2C row.

Turning the corner of the Study Of Corners squares

Now you will be joining into the rest of the C2C stitches between the Cluster and Moss squares while working across the bottom of the Mini V square. Once you have 5 rows of C2C blocks across the bottom of your dc square, you will start working your C2C rows into the top of the Moss square.

For the Moss square every row counts as 1 stitch.

Joining into the side of the C2C Moss stitch square

Continue making rows of C2C that join both the Mini V square and the Moss square until you have 18 blocks along the bottom of the Mini V square.

This will leave the Moss square with only 13 C2C blocks, with 5 blocks to be added when the next square is joined onto the blanket.

When you get to the bottom right hand edge of the Mini V square, you will stop before you make the 18th block at the edge. You want to make the chain 2 and join into the corner of the square, but don’t make the double crochet (like in the picture below). We need to set up the chsp for when we add the border to the next square.

leave the last ch3 unworked at the bottom of your square

Once you’ve got to this point you can cut off your yarn but don’t weave in your ends yet.
