For week 6 we’re making one of my favourite stitches – the C2C Moss stitch. The Moss stitch always looks fabulous no matter whether it’s made in rows or in the C2C style or how many or few colours you choose to use.

C2C Moss Stitch

This square is entirely single crochet based, so if you do have issues with your tension being too tight for your smaller stitches then this is a square that I would go up a hook size as it can come out on the small side.

For this square you’ll need a 5mm hook (or a 5.5mm if you’re going up a hook size) – this is the hook size I used for the whole pattern. I used Caron Simply Soft in the shade Pistachio. But you can use any aran or worsted weight yarn of your choice.

I used 114m / 124yds of yarn with my gauge of 5 rows of dc and 15 stitches in 10cm.

If you’d rather skip the ads and get an expansion pack alongside each week’s square, you can grab this pattern on Ravelry for £5 here. It’s released on the same weekly schedule as here, just with the extras and none of the clutter.

(And if you’re the type who collects every pattern I release – this one included – my Pattern Pass gets you the lot, including everything I publish in future, for a one-off £49.99.)

Abbreviations
All abbreviations are in US terms

  • Ch = chain
  • St = stitch
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Chsp = Chain Space

A note about turning chains: in the pattern instructions I state to make a dc turning chain. I use a stacked or alternate turning chain, but you could also make a ch2 as your turning chain. The choice is yours about what type of turning chain you would like to use. I have a video here which shows you the different type of turning chains you can use.

You can follow the written instructions below, or follow along with the videos.

For your yarn you will need 114 metres / 124 yards of Colour C – you can find all the yarn information for the CAL here.

Start by making a foundation chain of 3.

Row 1. Make a sc in the 3rd ch from your hook – this counts as a sc, ch1, sc row

Row 2. Turn and ch3. In the ch2 space make (sc, ch1, sc) all in the same sp – 3st, plus a ch3 sp.

Row 1 of the C2C Moss stitch

Row 3. Turn and ch3. Make a sc in the ch1 sp and then ch 1. In the ch3 space make (sc, ch1, sc) all in the same sp – 5st plus a ch3 sp

Row 4. Turn and ch3. Make a sc in the first ch1 sp and then ch1 and make a sc in the next chsp. Finish the row by making (sc, ch1, sc) all in the ch3 space – 7st plus a ch3 sp.

Row 5. Turn and ch3. Make a sc in the first ch1 sp and then *ch1 and make a sc in the next chsp*. Repeat between *and* ending with a ch1. Finish the row by making (sc, ch1, sc) all in the ch3 space – 9st plus a ch3 sp.

Rows 6 – 35. Repeat row 5. You will be increasing each row by 2 st.

Row 36. Turn and ch3. Make a sc in the first ch1 sp, *ch1 and make a sc in the next chsp*. Repeat between *and* ending with a ch1. Finish the row by making (sc, hdc) in the ch3 space.

Row 37. Turn and ch2 and sk the first 2 st, *in the next chsp make a sc and then ch1*. Repeat between *and*. When you reach the last ch 1 sp, make a sc but DON’T ch1. Make a sc in the ch 3 sp.

Row 38. Turn and ch2 and sk the first 2 st, *in the next chsp make a sc and then ch1*. Repeat between *and*. When you reach the last ch 1 sp, make a sc DONT ch1. Make a sc in the ch 2 sp.

Rows 39 – 70. Repeat row 38.

You should have 3 sc in Row 70.

Row 71. Turn and ch2. Make a sc in the next ch sp, then make a sc in the ch2 sp.

With only 1 ch1 space left in the C2C Moss piece

Row 72. Turn and ch1. Make a sc in the ch2 sp.

You can now cut off and weave in your ends.
