Welcome to the Study Of Corners crochet along! I’m so excited to finally be getting started and to share the variety that is possible with Corner To Corner (C2C) style stitches with you.
Keep reading for our week 1 pattern but if you haven’t heard much about this crochet along before, then check out this blog post here which will tell you what to expect.

For week 1 we’re starting with our gauging square which we’re going to make with the C2C double crochet stitch.

This not only gives us a nice easy start to the project, but by making a simple, basic stitch we get a square that we can gauge the rest of our squares by. Our squares don’t have to be the exact same size, but they do need to be within 2-3 cm of each other. You will then be able to use this double crochet square to tell if your future pieces are coming out too big or too small, early on so you can then adjust your hook size or your tension as needed.
For this square you’ll need a 5mm hook – this is the hook size I used for the whole pattern. I used Caron Simply Soft in the shade Orchid. But you can use any aran or worsted weight yarn of your choice.
I used 120m / 132yds of yarn with my gauge of 5 rows of dc and 15 stitches in 10cm.
If you’d rather skip the ads and get an expansion pack alongside each week’s square, you can grab this pattern on Ravelry for £5 here. It’s released on the same weekly schedule as here, just with the extras and none of the clutter.
(And if you’re the type who collects every pattern I release – this one included – my Pattern Pass gets you the lot, including everything I publish in future, for a one-off £49.99.)

Abbreviations
All abbreviations are in US terms
- Ch = chain
- St = stitch
- Dc = double crochet
- Dc3tog = double crochet 3 together
A note about turning chains: in the pattern instructions I state to make a dc turning chain. I use a stacked or alternate turning chain, but you could also make a ch2 as your turning chain. The choice is yours about what type of turning chain you would like to use. I have a video here which shows you the different type of turning chains you can use.
We’re going to start with our gauging square. This is made of simple double crochet stitches and will give us a square that we can measure all our other squares against for sizing. We will be joining our gauging square into our blankets too, so keep hold of it for a later week where it will become square number 6.
You can follow the written instructions below, or follow along with the videos.
For your yarn you will need 120 metres / 132 yards of Colour B – you can find all the yarn information for the CAL here.
Start by making a foundation chain of 4.
Row 1. In the 4th ch from your hook make 2 dc. Your turning ch counts as a st – 3 dc.

Row 2. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turn ch in the first st (your turning chain counts as the first st of the row). Make 2 dc also in the first st.

Make a dc in the next st. In the last st make 3 dc – 7dc

Row 3. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turn ch in the first st (your turning chain counts as the first st of the row) Make 2 dc also in the first st.
Make a dc in each st until you have 1 st left. In the last st make 3 dc – 11dc
Rows 4 – 18. Repeat row 3. You will be adding 4dc to your st count with every row.
Row 18 will have 71st.

Now we start the decrease.
Rows 19 – 35. Turn and ch1. Make a dc3tog over each of the first 3 st.
To make a dc3tog: YO, insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull up a loop,
YO and pull through 2 loops.

YO and insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops only.

YO and insert your hook into the 3rd st. YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops only.

YO and pull through all 4 loops on your hook.

Make a dc in every st until you have 3 st left.

Make a dc3tog over each of the last 3 st.

You will be losing 4 st in every row as we decrease.
Row 35 will have 3st.

Row 36. Turn and ch1. Make a dc3tog over all 3 remaining st.
You can cut off and weave in your ends.

Your square will measure 31 x 31cm if you’re following my gauge of 5 rows and 15 stitches in 10cm
We’re going to put this piece to one side for now. But this is your Gauging piece and you want all of your other pieces to be similar in size – it doesn’t matter if they’re not exactly the right size, they just need to be similar.
We will be joining this square into our blankets in a later week.
Next week we will be making the bottom left square of our blanket. For the next square I will be using Caron Simply Soft’s Plum Wine shade – look out for the yardage and full details in next week’s post. You can also find all the links to each part of the CAL on this page here, which will be updated each time a new part of the pattern is released.
