The Small Basketweave stitch is just one version of the Basketweave stitch. There are several varieties of this stitch which looks like weaving on a straw basket, including the Mini Basketweave stitch. In this stitch guide I will show you how to crochet the Small Basketweave stitch with all the pictures that you need along with a video guide that you can follow along with too.

I’ve used several versions of the Basketweave stitch in my crochet alongs, including the Basketweave which has a longer repeat in the 50 Stitches crochet along, and I used the Mini Basketweave stitch in both The Country Garden crochet along and the FrankenScrap crochet along.

The Small Basketweave stitch is a beautifully thick stitch that is quick and easy to make as it just needs front and back post stitches to create that wonderful texture. It would suit being used for blankets, sweaters, scarves and any other crochet project that you want a thick and warm fabric.

How To Crochet The Small Basketweave Stitch

Abbreviations

• St = Stitch
• Ch = Chain
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Fpdc = Front Post Double Crochet
• Bpdc = Back Post Double Crochet

Start by making a foundation chain in multiples of 4 plus 2 (plus 2 for your turning chain)

Row 1. In the 4th ch from your hook make a dc (your turning ch counts as the first st of the row). Make a dc each st across

Row 2. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turning ch in the first st. *Make a fpdc in each of the next 2 st then make a bpdc in the next 2 st* 

repeat between *and* making a dc in the last st of the row

Row 3. Repeat row 2

Row 4. Turn and ch1. Make a dc turning ch in the first st. *Make a bpdc in each of the next 2 st, and then make a fpdc in each of the next 2 st* repeat between *and* making a dc in the last st of the row.

Row 5. Repeat row 4

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until you have as many rows as you need

How To Add A Border To The Small Basketweave Stitch

The Small Basketweave Stitch is made entirely of double crochet rows. So to add a border you need to make 2 stitches into the side of every row.

I always recommend that you make a round of single crochet stitches around your piece first before adding any border pattern that you have planned, as doing this just helps to even your stitches out and make a nice solid round to add any further stitches into.
